Vice president M Venkaiah Naidu said journalism is a unique vocation to serve the truth and hold a mirror to the contemporary happenings in a society. The vice president, who was on a two-day visit in Kerala was speaking at the inauguration of Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Kollam Press Club today. The Vice president said over the years, the media landscape has changed drastically, and what we are seeing today is not an ideal situation.
The Vice president said in the past journalism was a mission for fighting every ill that afflicted the society but today the same cannot be said of the noble profession. He said these days the commercial and other considerations are taking precedence over everything else. The vice president added that the undesirable practices of mixing news with views now become the new normal.
Sensationalism, paid news and biased coverage have become the bane of modern-day journalism in addition to the problem of fake news. Venkaiah Naidu added that in such a situation there should not be any compromise on the core values of journalism. The vice president urged the media to act as a bridge between the Government and people and reiterated that there is a need to ensure justice is not denied to the people.
