Indonesia raises alert level for deadly Anak Krakatoa volcano

Indonesia today raised the danger level for Anak Krakatoa volcano that triggered a tsunami killing nearly 430 people last weekend. The authorities have also widened a no-go zone around the volcano to five kilometres, up from a previous two kilometres. Aviation officials have ordered flights to be redirected away from the area.

Earlier, the authorities had issued a warning that fresh activity at the crater threatened to trigger another deadly wave. People have been asked to stay away from the coast. Nearly 1,500 people were injured and over 21,000 people have evacuated to higher ground.

At least 159 people are still missing. A state of emergency has been declared until January 4, which authorities hope will make it easier to deploy assistance.
