Imprisonment for trespassing the railway tracks: South Central Railway

To avoid recurrence of accidents on the railway tracks and prevent trespassing, South Central Railway (SCR) on Wednesday launched a campaign with the slogan ‘Don’t Trespass and Risk Your Life’ The officials also unveiled a brochure in this regard highlighting the do’s and don’ts, while crossing the railway lines.  The officials warned of initiating action against a person found trespassing the railway tracks under Section 147 of the Railways Act, 1989. This entails punishment with imprisonment for a term up to six months or with fine of `1,000 or both. The railway officials suggested some precautions to ensure the safety of the people.

Precautions to be taken
Do not trespass railway tracks. Make use of FOBs, subways, the road over or under bridges, rail crossings among others
Do not use mobile phones, while walking near railway tracks or while boarding or alighting trains
Do not take photographs in the vicinity of railway tracks
Do not stand on the footboard of trains or on the edge of the platforms. Do not board or alight trains from the wrong side at railway stations
Do not board or alight a running train or crowd the entrance of the coach, which hampers the movement of other passengers.
