Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar and Director General of Police T K Rajendra’s houses were among the 40 locations raided by the CBI in connection with its probe into the multi-crore ‘gutkha scam’ in Chennai. Properties of other police officers, including Former Police Commissioner S George, were also raided by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The Madras High Court in April ordered the CBI to probe sale of chewing tobacco, which is banned in Tamil Nadu. Previously when income tax officials raided the assets of a businessman named Madhava Rao, the officials found a diary in his office which carried names of several political leaders, senior police officers, regarding the involvement of taking bribes nearly Rs.40 crore from the ‘gutkha’ manufacturers.
