Govt reduces onion stock holding limit for retailers, wholesalers amid rising prices

The government has decided to import one lakh tonnes of onions to control price rise in the market. In a tweet, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said that the Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation of India (MMTC) has been asked to import onions and make the vegetable available for distribution for a month, between 15th of this month and 15th of December.

The NAFED has been directed to supply imported onions across the country. Onion prices have risen sharply for more than a month due to tight supply. The retail prices have increased up to Rs 100 per kg in the national capital and ruling in the range of Rs 60-80 per kg in other parts of the country, as per the trade data.
