The death toll from a volcano-triggered tsunami has risen to 222, with more than 800 people injured in Indonesia. The numbers could increase once authorities hear from all stricken areas. Dozens are missing from the disaster areas along the coastlines of western Java and southern Sumatra islands.
The deaths were reported mainly from Padenglang Regency, South Lampung and Serang, all less than 150 kilometres from Jakarta. The authorities said the possible cause of the tsunami was undersea landslides following the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano. The waves swept terrified people into the sea on Saturday night due to an eruption on the volcanic island that emerged from the sea in the 1920s.
Meanwhile, India has offered help to Tsunami-hit Indonesia. In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, India is ready to assist its maritime neighbour and friend in relief work. The Prime Minister expressed sadness to Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the loss of lives and destruction. Mr Modi also offered condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured an early recovery.
