PROFESSIONAL AND ETHICAL ROLE OF CIVIL ENGINEERS DURING AND POST COVID – 19

COVID-19

IEI, Telangana State Centre organized Er A P Ranganatha Swamy 23 rd Endowment Lecture on “Professional and Ethical Role of Civil Engineers during and post Covid-19” delivered by Prof. P Sreenivas Sarma, Professor of Civil Engineering and Director-Student Affairs & Progression, CBIT  Hyderabad. During his presentation the COVID-19 pandemic has left so much of an impact on human lives that we already began to talk in terms of life ‘before COVID’ and ‘after COVID’.

The ensuing effects of the current onslaught of this dreadful virus would surely be indelible in all walks of life. Human activities have almost come to a halt. Many trades and industries are either closed or searching for newer ways and means of contributing for their survival. Construction industry, which contributes for almost half of the world’s infrastructural needs and is responsible for 13% of the  world’s GDP, is now severely hit by this COVID-19. All stakeholders of this industry and more importantly the Civil Engineering fraternity have a responsibility to bring back the glory of this industry, for the good of the mankind. Greater is the responsibility for us the Civil Engineers, to behave more professionally and ethically in this hour of criticality and even in future.

Emulating the great personalities who belong to the Civil Engineering field and left an imprint with their professional and ethical values, will be not only a true tribute to them but also the need of the hour. Keeping these aspects in view, Er. A P Ranganatha Swamy 23 rd endowment lecture focuses on “Professional and Ethical Role of Civil Engineers during and post COVID-19”.

The challenges such as maintaining social distancing in the work sites, carrying on the inspections

and maintenance activities remotely etc., will be discussed and addressed. At the same time the opportunities presented by the current situations will be explored. Light will also be thrown on the possible solutions for the limitations imposed by this new situation on the Civil engineers. The ethical role to be played by the Civil engineers without losing the professional excellence will be outlined. The need for preparedness to deal with future pandemics and global catastrophes will also be hinted.
