Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari recommended imposition of President’s Rule in the state. The Union Cabinet today discussed the political situation in Maharashtra as no party is in a position to form the government even after 18 days of declaration of Assembly elections results. Sources said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the meeting before leaving for the two-day BRICS Summit in Brazil.
As per a statement tweeted by Koshyari’s office, “He is satisfied that the government cannot be carried on in accordance with the Constitution, (and therefore) has today submitted a report as contemplated by the provision of Article 356 of the Constitution.” Article 356, commonly known as President’s rule, deals with ‘failure of constitutional machinery in the state’.
