‘Give mediation a chance’: Supreme Court on Ayodhya case

The Supreme Court has said even if there is one per cent chance, mediation should be considered to resolve the Ram-Janmabhoomi – Babri Masjid land dispute. A five-judge constitution bench of the top court commenced the hearing on the case today. The bench comprises Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer.

Fourteen appeals have been filed in the apex court against the 2010 Allahabad High Court judgment, delivered in four civil suits, that the 2.77-acre land in Ayodhya be partitioned equally among the three parties – the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla. Last month, the Centre had moved the Supreme Court seeking its nod to return the 67-acre undisputed acquired land around the disputed site to the original owners.
